Europe Tour Day 4 July 8

Today we drove from Edinburgh to the highlands of Scotland, via St Andrews where we stopped for a visit

Our first stop for the day was to St Andrews, made famous mostly for its golf and its university.  St Andrews is a beautiful seaside town and this is also where  Prince William and Kate Middleton went to college and met.  We had a nice time in St Andrews and walked around the town past the golf course and stopping mainly at the ruins of the old St Andrews Cathedral and Castle.

We had a nice time in St Andrews and walked around the town stopping mainly at the ruins of the old St Andrews Cathedral, the largest and most important church in medieval Scotland, and the St Andrews Castle where the ruins of the Castle sat imposingly on the edge of the water.

After stopping at St Andrews we made our way up to Blair Castle via a beautiful little town called Pitlochery.  We had only a very brief stop here but could have stopped and wandered for hours.  Blair Castle has been the home to various Dukes of Atholl and was originally built in 1269, and is now open to the public.  It has a great and varied history and after numerous seiges, changes in ownership and redevelopments the castle as we saw it has been decked out the same way for hundreds of years, complete with original furniture, china, tapestrys and paintings as have been there for centuries.  The paint and the wall coverings were even original having only been retouched here and there over the last few hundred years.

Bit confused where we were for a minute

Thats right, we don't see too many of these signs

This did look very much like home there for a while, looking at the ranges in the distance

Going into the Highlands

The scenery was quite spectacular as you can see below.

We stayed in a beautiful little family run hotel and we all had a great night.  The boys played pool and table tennis with the other kids from our tour and we had a quiet night mingling with our tour group.

Tomorrow we head from the highlands back into England and into the Lakes District.
